Fawzi al Qawuqji


Fawzi alQawuqji was a leading Arab nationalist military figure in the interwar period, based in Germany, and allied to Nazi Germany during World War II, who served as the Arab Liberation Army field commander during the 1948 Palestine War.

Fawzi alQawuqji was born in 1890 into a Turkmen family in the Lebanese city, Tripoli, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1912 he graduated from the military academy in Istanbul. Gilbert Achcar calls him Arab nationalisms leading military figure in the interwar period... served as a commander in all the Arab national battles of the period.
